When you want to build your own shower stall using ceramic tile, you do need to know about tile shower pan installation. It is important to build the shower pan correctly, which involves using masonry to build the base for the tile. Although this may sound simple, it is not as simple as you might think. You do have to make sure you do not have any cracks or crevices in the floor that could leak at a later date when it will be a lot harder to fix. It is natural for the shower to leak, which is the purpose of a tile pan. The grout in the tile is porous, so water will naturally leak through it. You need to have a waterproof liner on the floor so that the water will not go through the floor and cause the subfloor to rot. This will cause you real problems, which could involve taking out the shower and starting from scratch. The tile pan needs to be placed under the ceramic tile and have a routing system that will take the water to the drain. Gravel in the lower drain will help to keep the drain open. Next pour top base of masonry so that it slopes towards the drain. Now the curved base is ready for the thinset application and the tile application. When the mortar and tile sets, you can apply the grout. There are fiberglass shower pans you can buy that are good to use with a ceramic tile shower. If you use one of these, it is important to remember that you cannot install tiles on the floor of the shower this kind of tile pan.
